Gates, who once said that tackling climate is going to take historic levels of global cooperation, said that while there are many areas that need work, passenger cars is one of the more hopeful areas. “Many car companies are moving super-fast when it comes to electric cars,” he added.
But are there any areas for improvement? Yes. “The range. If you want to go long distance, the pervasiveness of recharging and the time to recharge compared to filling up a time of gas. You spend less on electricity than gasoline, and the maintenance cost is a little bit less. Although the insurance is a little bit more. Clearly from all the climate areas, this one is the most hopeful.”
Gates already has an impressive car collection, and choosing an EV as his latest purchase says something important about the state of the electric market. “The green approach will cost people more than the dirty approach and so convincing people of the benefits of stopping these emissions means that you should be willing to pay extra for some of these activities. We might get the green premium to zero so you don’t pay any extra but because there are so many sources of emissions, some of them will be premium priced.”
